WEEKEND REPORT FOR THE DEPOT 18/19 JANUARY

mikehallum-rudd

Updated: Jan 21

It was my pleasure this weekend on one of those rare occasions that I had both days free to cover the Responsible Officer's role. This gave me the chance to meet up with those who attend nearly every week on a Sunday, a great bunch of guys who toil away in the background, sometimes doing those unsung tasks which are an integral part of the Society. It also gave me the opportunity to have a good chat with them and find out more about them and ways in which they can further support the Society.

Saturday 18th saw a team of no fewer than 18 attending so we were able to cover many tasks.

Great progress was made with the whole of 'B' side bodywork lightly rubbed down in advance of the planned paintwork. All the existing white decals were removed on both sides. More of the bodyside corrosion was also given attention. Templates were made for the new headcode panel covers.

The 'Delectricians' were again hard at work installing the replacement cables in 15, now complete. The diode which was thought to be the issue has been away for testing and has been rebuilt on site and fitted. Hopefully after testing we should be back to where we were in October.

Although off site at the GCR, a small team attended mid week and tested the batteries and it was found that they are life expired. We are in the process of obtaining quotations with a view to sourcing some new ones.

DEPOT

Work continued on removing items from PU 423 in readiness for the work to enable us to get this fairly low hours engine serviceable for traffic. The phasing case is now ready to go away to our contractor, Compact Orbital Gears. The silencer lagging was fitted to PU 430. There was also some fettling and cleaning of some old engine room door handle spares to go into stores as we were short of a few component parts on the locos.

Sunday 19th saw the usual team gather and continue with their existing projects.

55008 Cab

Work continued on manufacturing, installing and painting the power cable conduit into the ETH box on the bulkhead, whilst in the engine room area one of the team is working on renovating the demonstration Power Unit display. Both are an enhancement to the cab as a visitor attraction.
