The loco batteries were put on charge to enable the NR Safety Systems, TPWS, GSMR, OTMR, to be checked. See attached photo, all was in working order.

Following a split buffer beam pipe, No 2 end, which put a stop to air testing systems, a team set about effecting a repair and making up a new section of piping which included an 'elbow' in a rather difficult place to access and it was welded to a bracket, ground off. The new union and elbow were fitted, compressor attached and all was good.

Elsewhere the Nose End Fire Bottle brackets were refixed and tightened up. We had new fire bottle pull covers made in brass as the old ones were missing. A clearout of a locker revealed their location and were the originals from back in 1997. These have now been fitted with the replacements put aside.

Electrically a productive morning with the Power Circuits coming to life, albeit working in Test Mode due to the lack of air supply and a few components bridged out but enough progress was made to be confident that all is looking good. Next it was the turn of checking the Air Control Governors. ACG1 was seized but one of the team stripped, repaired it and got it working. 2 others from the team were having fun chasing 3 wires from No 1 nose end from the Distributor to the Brake Selector Switch at No 2 end. Finally the other 2 of the team were busy sorting the 2 Relays for the Air and Vacuum circuits in the nose end, it appears that they have previously been rewired incorrectly, work in progress. Unfortunately the static air compressor was not producing enough pressure to complete all tests as the Feed Cut Off Valve was not activating, so will be done another weekend.

Whilst not on site, the defective 24" Vacuum adjusting valve was removed and sent away for repair, as were the 2 x cab speedo's, due to the No 1 unit reading low, also dispatched for calibration/repair. Both to NR Approved Suppliers. A leaking Oil Strainer was also reseated and the leak stopped. Cab hand held fire bottles removed for annual service.

Following over 30 man hours work Unit 430 is now watertight. Several Injector and Blanking Pockets had to be reworked with the replacment of many 'O' rings. We found a leak, thought to be coming from the block but instead it was traced to B1 & B4 Injector Pockets.
The next phase of this project is to reunite the Phasing Case once it has been returned from our contractor following assessment and works to make it fit for use following over 40 years of standing idle…

A new volunteer with experience on Stores Management & Systems made a start with some of the electrical components reducing the amount of space taken. He also looked at other areas where he can make improvements and he made a start.
