Volunteers view – 23/08/14

Graham Clarke writes:

Mike, Geoff, Tom P and I have been to the SVR today. The others have been washing and trying to polish 55019 in between the heavy showers. They are good for rinsing, but that’s all. It looks nice though and it’s out next Saturday with me as travelling fitter. I’ve been testing engine temperature probes. It did not go very well and I need a more accurate heat source and a more accurate way to measure the temperature. Back to the drawing board, although the warning lights for high water temperature are working ok.

55019 running at SVR on Bank Holiday Monday

Members and other ‘Deltic’ fans are reminded that 55019 will be operating at the Severn Valley Railway on Bank Holiday Monday, 25th August. The loco will work two round trips from Kidderminster, timed as follows:

09.55 Kidderminster-Bridgnorth, 11.55 Bridgnorth-Kidderminster, 13.30 Kidderminster-Bridgnorth, 15.40 Bridgnorth-Kidderminster

Severn Valley update

It is planned that later this month, 55019 ‘ROYAL HIGHLAND FUSILIER’ will carry a wreath in memory of Martin Harris, former VLO for the loco, who sadly passed away last month. He was heavily involved in the loco, which was his favourite Deltic, for many years streching back to the days on the NYMR.

The wreath will be carried on an additional running day which will take place on Saturday 30th August when the loco is now rostered to work two round trips on the usual diesel turn, ie 09.55 Kidderminster-Bridgnorth, 11.55 Bridgnorth-Kidderminster, 13.30 Kidderminster-Bridgnorth, 15.40 Bridgnorth-Kidderminster..

55019 to operate at ELR on November 8th

Following its summer visit to the Severn Valley Railway, 55019 ‘ROYAL HIGHLAND FUSILIER’ will return north via the East Lancashire Railway, where it will operate for one day only on Saturday 8th November. This is the day after D9009 ‘ALYCIDON’ haules the evening ‘Diesel Diner’ (see story further down) so will provide a good weekend of ‘Deltic’ action.

The full list of running days at the ELR for the remainder of the visit reads:

Saturday/Sunday 6th/7th September (D9009 on diesel diagram), Saturday/Sunday 27th/28th September (D9009 running at Diesel Gala),  Saturday/Sunday October 11th/12th (D9009 running at ECML event), Friday 7th November (D9009 on Diesel Diner), Saturday 8th November (55019 running on Diesel Theme Day), Monday 10th November (D9009 on Diesel Footplate Experience).

Timetable ‘C’ will be in operation, giving 55019 two round trips during the day and providing 64 miles of ‘Deltic’ haulage. Times for the ‘Deltic’ hauled trains are as follows:

09.55 Kidderminster-Bridgnorth, 11.55 Bridgnorth-Kidderminster, 13.30 Kidderminster-Bridgnorth, 15.40 Bridgnorth-Kidderminster.

Successful first week for 55019 at SVR

55019 ‘ROYAL HIGHLAND FUSILIER’ undertook its first passenger duties at the Severn Valley Railway over the period from June 17th-20th, working three timetabled trains on each day. A relay problem on the first day caused a small delay, and resulted in the loco operating on the other power unit. The relay was changed later that day.

The pictures below were take by Stuart Page from the DPS support crew on June 18 and show the loco at both Bridgnorth and Kidderminster.

SVR workings this week

Both D9009 ‘ALYCIDON’ and 55019 ‘ROYAL HIGHLAND FUSILIER’ have now undergone an oil change and are now available for service. 55019 is due to undertake its first passenger workings of the season at the Severn Valley Railway this week, and is booked to operate the following services on Tuesday-Friday (June 17th-20th):

11.40 Kidderminster-Highley

14.05 Highley-Bridgnorth

15.20 Bridgnorth-Kidderminster

ELR & SVR roster update

D9009 will not be working at the ELR this weekend (June 14th/15th) and the diesel diagram will now be covered by 37324.  As many of you will be aware, both D9009 and 55019 require an oil change and the Society is working with suppliers and heritage rail operators to ensure that the matter is brought to a swift conclusion and minimum disruption is caused to the season’s operating programme.

At the Severn Valley Railway, the footplate experience with 55019 on June 16th has been rescheduled to take place on August 21st. On a more positive note,  additional running days will take place on Saturday July 12th and Saturday August 30th when the loco will operate the Timetable ‘C’ diesel diagram. Watch this space for more details regarding September workings.
