D9009 undergoes tyre turning at Tyseley

D9009 ‘Alycidon’ ran as planned yesterday, hauling the Class 40 Preservation Society’s D335 from the ELR to Barrow Hill before the pair ‘hitched a lift’ behind another Class 40, 345, to Tyseley. This was 345′s first main line outing for three years, and we wish our colleagues in the CFPS the best of luck for future main line operations with the ‘Whistler’ which looks stunning in its early 1970s colour scheme.

Earlier this afternoon, D9009 was put on the wheel lathe at Tyseley for tyre turning. The pictures below, courtesy of David Ruddick, show firstly the loco waiting its turn:

All three locos are due to return north on Friday 8th November, with 345 providing traction again. D9009 will be dropped off at Barrow Hill, with the two Class 40s then returning to their base at the East Lancs Railway. D9009 move to Tyseley – November 4th

D9009 ‘Alycidon’  is scheduled to leave the East Lancashire Railway on November 4, when it will haul the Class 40 Preservation Society’s No. D335 to Barrow Hill, where the pair will join up with No. 345, all three locos then running to Tyseley for tyre turning. This leg will be hauled by No. 345, which is making its first main line outing for over three years – a welcome return of a Class 40 to the main line.

D9009+D335 are booked to leave Castleton on the ELR at around 08.00 on Monday, arriving at Barrow Hill at 10.52. The pair of locos, hauled by 345, should then depart for Tyseley at 13.40, arriving at 16.40. Full timings can be found at:

‘Tulyar’ lift at DPS depot

Following the arrival of a new set of bogies for D9015 ‘Tulyar’ last week, the loco was lifted at the DPS depot yesterday to enable its worn bogies to be removed and also to allow work to continue on the traction motor cabling. It will also permit more underside work to be carried out.  The loco now stands on a set of jacks in the DPS depot.

In the photo below, supplied by Graham Clarke, three of those involved in the lift (Alex Williams, Graham Clarke and Ray Ekins) stand in front of the loco after a hard day’s work.

New bogies obtained for ‘Tulyar’

The DPS is pleased to announced that a set of cast bogies, which it is hoped will be capable of 100 mph operation after overhaul, have been acquired from CF Booth at Rotherham and arrived at Barrow Hill earlier today. The bogies, which will be put under D9015 ‘Tulyar’ in due course, have been exchanged for a scrap pair which have been sent away for scrap.

“Barrow Hill Live” this weekend – September 28/29

This weekend sees the “Barrow Hill Live” event taking place, and there will be plenty to see for Deltic followers. A guest Deltic, in the form of the NRM’s 55002 ‘The Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry’, will be present, as well as our own D9015 ‘Tulyar’ undergoing restoration and 55019 ‘Royal Highland Fusilier’. The DPS depot will house a modern traction layout, ‘Deepcar’, and there will be a 5″ gauge model of the prototype DELTIC on display.

For those coming by public transport, there will be a free bus service from Chesterfield station, as well as a train service covering the connection into the event (price £6 return, plus admission). D9009 reaches Whitby on members day

The DPS members day, this year held as part of the NYMR Diesel Gala, saw D9009 ‘ALYCIDON’ break new ground with a run to Whitby, the fourth Deltic to appear at the North Yorkshire resort. Unfortunately, the run to Battersby had to be curtailed just after Egton owing to a bridge bash by a road vehicle which also caused services between Middlesbrough and Whitby to be cancelled. The train had to return to Whitby, from where D9009 was able to take up the remainder of its booked diagram.

The bridge bash is not expected to have an impact on the return of the convoy (D9009 hauling D821 ‘Greyhound’ and D1062 ‘Western Courier’) which is due to take place on Tuesday, departing Grosmont at 06.38. 2013 Christmas Draw

We are extremely sorry, but due to an error, the full article about this year’s raffle does not appear in the current issue of Deltic Deadline.  The full article is reproduced below; including important information about what to do to enter the draw and other advice to help it run smoothly.  The draw itself is not affected in any way by the error and it will proceed as normal.

The draw will take place after lunch on the 11th of January 2013 at the Depot.

Our Society has had a busy and successful year, but we cannot rest on our laurels.  There will always be something new to challenge us and stretch us to achieve more than we have done before.  Alycidon needs keeping mainline certified, RHF needs keeping in good order for use on preserved lines (where it’s more accessible to members) and Tulyar needs completing.

To illustrate what I am describing, I’ll give some examples:

  • Alycidon needs some spare NRN radios, because GSM-R has not replaced NRN as envisaged and the old system is still needed ~ £500-£1,000;
  • Annual certification cost for mainline use ~ >£2,500;
  • Oil and Fuel filters ~ £400 per power unit;
  • Speedometer calibration ~ £400;
  • Overhaul of Tulyar’s new bogies ~ could be £50,000;
  • Generator and heavy service ~ £5,000 (2 needed for Tulyar);
  • Overhauled governor, fuel pumps and fuel injectors ~ >£6,000 per power unit, depending on condition and how quickly you want them;
  • And the list continues.

I suspect some will say we’ve got the begging bowl out again and roll their eyes.  I view it more that this Society would not exist and we would not be able to enjoy Deltics in the 21st Century without the generosity of our members and our many friends going right back to the park in Northhampton, where our three founder members decided it was possible to save a Deltic for the future and keep it running.  Hence, we keep asking for your support and I run this raffle every year.

We are now getting to a point in our engineering lifecycle, where we have to carry out some serious engineering on bogies and power units to allow us to move forward.  Therefore, fundraising is going to become even more critical than ever before.  We will have to invest in new facilities and contract to get some of the big jobs done that are beyond what we can do ourselves.  Also, if you know anyone who can help us with lifting equipment at the right price for our power units, please contact me.  There will be more information on this in the run up to next year’s AGM in York.  The strategy is being actively worked on at the moment.

So, please could I ask everyone to really try to sell as many tickets as possible this year?  If you can’t sell some tickets, then please could you think about doing some other form of fundraising?  Every little helps and everybody’s support is really appreciated.

Now some polite requests:

  • Due to legislation, tickets may only be bought and sold by persons who are at least 16 years old.  We will endeavour not to send tickets to members under 16.  However, if you are under 16 and receive any tickets, please pass them to an adult;
  • Please only send tickets to me: Graham Clarke, DPS, c/o 12 Baskin Lane, Beeston, NOTTINGHAM.  NG9 5GA.  Tickets sent to other DPS Officers often miss the draw and cause unnecessary work and expense;
  • Please make cheques payable to the Deltic Preservation Society and not me personally.  I cannot cash incorrectly made out cheques and tickets cannot be accepted without a valid cheque;
  • Please return your tickets, if you do not want them;
  • Please fully complete all of the counterfoils.  I cannot pay prizes to people, if I don’t know who they are!
  • Please make sure that you have enclosed payment for the tickets.   People do regularly forget to send a cheque with their tickets.

Where you have asked us not to, we endeavour not to send raffle tickets to you.  I apologise in advance, to those of you who object to receiving tickets.  If you feel that you should not have received them, please throw them away.  Thank you to the Editor and the team for packing the tickets with your copy of Deadline.  The raffle would not happen without their hard work.
