East Coast Giants event at Barrow Hill : February 8th-9th

The DPS Deltics will be taking on a starring role at Barrow Hill’s ‘East Coast Giants’ event over the weekend of February 8th & 9th which sees three A4 steam locos visiting, including the two repatriated examples, 4489 ‘DOMINION OF CANADA’ and 60008 ‘DWIGHT t D EISENHOWER’, which will be returning to Canada and the United States in the next few months.

D9009 ‘ALYCIDON’ will be on display, most likely by the bay platform, while 55019 ‘ROYAL HIGHLAND FUSILIER’ will be open for cab visits. We may also be able to open up a cab of D9015 ‘TULYAR’, enabling visitors to view progress in the engine room and it is also hoped to offer visits to the power unit house to small numbers of people. In addition, the ‘Deepcar’ model railway layout will be in the depot, as will the DPS Sales Stand of course. This is a very busy weekend for the society, as we also have a Sales Stand at Doncaster Model Railway Exhibition.

Entry to the event is £11.50 (in advance) and £13.50 (on the gate), with discounts for children and special rates for families. A free bus service will operate from Chesterfield station, and more details can be obtained by visiting the Barrow Hill website at http://www.barrowhill.org/links/GIANTSOFSTEAM.pdf

Gallery Updates

The gallery covering main line workings by D9009 has been expanded this week to cover the loco’s appearance on ‘The Winter Settler’ on Saturday 28th December. Thanks go to everyone who has contributed photographs – the gallery can be found by clicking here.

Successful outing for D9009

D9009 ‘ALYCIDON’ completed another successful railtour yesterday. Having departed Carlisle some 56 minutes late owing to delays in getting the loco run round in Carlisle New Yard, the train arrived back at Sheffield just four minutes late, due to an very good run on the ECML which included some 100 mph running due to some excellent pathing by Network Rail control. A big thanks goes to everyone involved, in particular our friends and colleagues at Pathfinder Tours, Riviera Trains and DB Schenker.

The picture below shows D9009 at Sheffield, just before its departure back ‘home’ to Barrow Hill. We are creating a gallery of pictures from the day, if you would like to contribute, please send these to webmaster@thedps.co.uk

D9009 performance article in ‘TRACTION’ magazine

In addition to the feature on the DPS depot mentioned a few days ago, the December 2013 issue of ‘TRACTION’ also included a feature on D9009′s performances on its recent outings. We are pleased to be able to offer members and friends the opportunity to see this article, and a pdf file can be downloaded by clicking here. Once again, our thanks go to the editor of ‘TRACTION’, Stephen Rabone, for allowing us to reproduce this article.
