A full roster for the ELR Diesel Gala on March 8th & 9th, which features D9531, 33109, 37109, 37324, D335, 345, D1501 and 50015 in action as well as D9009 ‘ALYCIDON’, has now been released by the ELR. More details regarding the event can be found at http://www.elrdiesel.info/events.php and the timetable/roster can be downloaded by clicking here.
The DPS is pleased to announce that D9009 ‘ALYCIDON’ will be moving to the East Lancashire Railway, where it will be outstationed for most of the 2014 season, later this month. The visit will enable ongoing work to be completed on a railway with a main line connection where it can then be tested both in traffic and if necessary at higher speeds. It also makes the loco much more accessible for the DPS Mechanical Engineer who lives at Warrington.
D9009 is planned to move from Barrow Hill to Bury during the week commencing February 24th, and its first passenger workings at the ELR will be during the line’s Spring Diesel Gala on March 8th and 9th. Planned workings at the event will be:
Saturday March 8th:
09.35 Heywood-Rawtenstall, 10.56 Rawtenstall-Heywood (d/h with 50015), 12.05 Heywood-Rawtenstall, 19.55 Rawtenstall-Heywood. The last of these workings is as part of the ‘beerex’ which will be worked by D335 and D9009 top and tail.
Sunday March 9th:
10.25 Heywood-Rawtenstall, 11.46 Rawtenstall-Heywood (d/h with D335), 13.05 Heywood-Bury (d/h with 37109), 14.30 Bury-Rawtenstall (d/h with 37324), 15.26 Rawtenstall-Bury (d/h with 50015).
A full timetable/loco roster for the event will be available shortly.

Following on from last weekend’s successful outing to Carlisle, Pathfinder Tours has another proposed trip with D9009 ‘ALYCIDON’, running from York to Edinburgh and back, out via the Blyth & Tyne route and back ‘fast’ over the ECML. More details to follow.
D9009 ‘ALYCIDON’ completed another successful railtour yesterday. Having departed Carlisle some 56 minutes late owing to delays in getting the loco run round in Carlisle New Yard, the train arrived back at Sheffield just four minutes late, due to an very good run on the ECML which included some 100 mph running due to some excellent pathing by Network Rail control. A big thanks goes to everyone involved, in particular our friends and colleagues at Pathfinder Tours, Riviera Trains and DB Schenker.
The picture below shows D9009 at Sheffield, just before its departure back ‘home’ to Barrow Hill. We are creating a gallery of pictures from the day, if you would like to contribute, please send these to firstname.lastname@example.org
It is now less than two days until “The Winter Settler”, which is booked to be hauled by D9009 ‘ALYCIDON’, runs. The loco is booked to leave Barrow Hill at 08.18, running to Derby where it takes over from the Class 67 which brings the train from Crewe. Timings for the light engine move can be found at http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U51905/2013/12/28/advanced
The tour leaves Derby at 09.46 and runs via Chesterfield and Sheffield (both pick-ups) then via Doncaster and Hambleton curve to Leeds and on to Carlisle, arriving at 14.12. Full timings for this leg are at http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U51900/2013/12/28/advanced
After a break of just under 90 minutes in Carlisle, the train returns via the Tyne Valley, setting down first at York and then via Doncaster and is booked to run via Rotherham Central/Tinsley Junction/Woodburn Junction to Sheffield – new Deltic track perhaps? Timings are at http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U51902/2013/12/28/advanced . At Sheffield, D9009 will be detached immediately, and the Class 67 attached to the other end of the train for departure via the ‘old road’ to Chesterfield and then on to Crewe. D9009 should return to Barrow Hill , running direct to Chesterfield first, and should be back on site before the tour passes Barrow Hill South Junction with the ’67′. Timings for the final light engine move are at http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/U51907/2013/12/28/advanced
Lastly, a reminder that the DPS Sales Stand will be located in coach A, and among the items on sale will the ‘The Compendium of Deltics’ new DVD from Visions International.

In addition to the feature on the DPS depot mentioned a few days ago, the December 2013 issue of ‘TRACTION’ also included a feature on D9009′s performances on its recent outings. We are pleased to be able to offer members and friends the opportunity to see this article, and a pdf file can be downloaded by clicking here. Please note that this and the other feature on the DPS depot are low resolution files, and as such are not as high quality as the printed page – see http://www.atlanticpublishers.com/magazines/traction/ if you would like to obtain a printed copy.
Once again, our thanks go to the editor of ‘TRACTION’, Stephen Rabone, for allowing us to reproduce this article.
Finally, if you would like to check out D9009′s performances yourself, remember that the loco is booked power for Pathfinder’s ‘Winter Settler’ on December 28th – please visit http://www.pathfindertours.co.uk/index.php/tour-calendar-reader/events/the-winter-settler.html for more details or to book on the tour.
Following its visit to London Midland’s depot at Tyseley for tyre turning with Class 40s D335 and 345, D9009 ‘Alycidon’ is booked to return to the DPS depot at Barrow Hill tomorrow. The convoy is due to leave Tyseley at 10.26 and run via Derby to Barrow Hill, arriving at 12.19. The Class 40s will then continue back to the East Lancashire Railway, where 345 should be in action on the diesel diagram on Saturday. Full timings for the move with D9009 and the two 40s can be found at http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/R37432/2013/11/08/advanced
Members of the DPS engineering team have been busy today preparing D9009 for tomorrow, and the picture below shows Alex Williams and Stuart Page at Tyseley in front of the loco. Thanks go to Ben Williams for the picture.
Lastly, a reminder to everyone that D9009′s next booked outing is on December 28th, when it will be used on Pathfinder’s ‘Winter Settler’ railtour – for more information, and to book, please see http://www.pathfindertours.co.uk/index.php/tour-calendar-reader/events/the-winter-settler.html
D9009 ‘Alycidon’ ran as planned yesterday, hauling the Class 40 Preservation Society’s D335 from the ELR to Barrow Hill before the pair ‘hitched a lift’ behind another Class 40, 345, to Tyseley. This was 345′s first main line outing for three years, and we wish our colleagues in the CFPS the best of luck for future main line operations with the ‘Whistler’ which looks stunning in its early 1970s colour scheme.
Earlier this afternoon, D9009 was put on the wheel lathe at Tyseley for tyre turning. The pictures below, courtesy of David Ruddick, show firstly the loco waiting its turn:
The loco moved onto the wheel lathe later, as seen below:
All three locos are due to return north on Friday 8th November, with 345 providing traction again. D9009 will be dropped off at Barrow Hill, with the two Class 40s then returning to their base at the East Lancs Railway. The convoy is due to leave Tyseley at 10.26 and full timings are available at http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/R37432/2013/11/08/advanced
