Volunteer’s View: April 26th 2014

Today with Alex, Ray, Mike, Tom, Stuart, Geoff & Steve, we completed the exam work and paperwork on no. 19. It’s now all ready to go to the SVR.  We also set up the vacuum brakes (too low), fixed a fault on no.1 engine governor causing it not to load (no power). Other faults with auxiliary power control and throttle sequence control (engines not speeding up properly). Thanks to everybody, I’m pleased we got it all done on time – phew!

Volunteer’s View: April 12th 2014

This week sees the return of our occasional “Volunteer’s View” detailing goings-on at the DPS depot. While many Deltic followers were enjoying the highly successful trip behind the NRM’s 55002 to Aberdeen, work continued at Barrow Hill, as detailed in Graham Clarke’s report below:

It was a very productive day at Barrow Hill yesterday . Good progress was made on 55019′s exam in preparation for the summer at the Severn Valley Railway. Steve cleaned no.2 main generator, Mike checked various fluid levels and with Geoff’s help the fuel and oil debris traps. Geoff also finished some paintwork repairs on one of the noses and around a cab door. Tom greased the hand brake mechanisms and helped me with checking all of the electrical switch and control equipment. I also explained to him what I was doing. It’s important to try to pass on the knowledge to a younger generation. Thanks for all the help.

Deltic followers get-together: Friday 11 April

With many Deltic enthusiasts expected to be in the area advance of 52A Tours’ Deltic Aberdonian railtour with 55002 ‘THE KINGS OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY’ on Saturday 12 April, DPS member John Herbert has arranged a social get-together the previous evening in Brigantes Bar & Brasserie in York. All are welcome from 18.00 onwards. (To find Brigantes, turn right outside the main station entrance, follow the road round to Micklegate traffic lights/crossroads, turn left and through Micklegate Bar and it is approx 100 metres on the left.)

We wish our friends in the KOYLI Group at the NRM all the very best with the loco’s first main line passenger trip since 1981.

“The Forth Scot” cancellation – Monday 5th May

It is with disappointment that we have to inform members and supporters that we have been advised by Pathfinder Tours, the promoter of the train, that the ‘Forth Scot’ tour with D9009 ‘ALYCIDON’ on May 5th has been cancelled. Regrettably, bookings had almost completely dried up in recent few weeks, and with the number of tickets sold somewhat short of break even, the decision was reluctantly taken to cancel the train.

As the traction provider for this train, the DPS would like to apologise for any disappointment caused by the cancellation of this railtour, which, as you will appreciate, is out of the society’s control.

DPS Committee Changes

As those of you who attended the AGM earlier this month will be aware, there have been some changes to the DPS committee. Samantha Hickson and Peter Kennan have both stepped down, and we would like to thank them both, and Peter’s wife Gillian, who has looked after Membership for the past few years, for all the work they have put in on behalf of the society.

We are pleased to advise that Rosemary Brain has offered to take over the Membership function, and can be contacted by e-mailing membershipATthedps.co.uk. The new address for membership matters is 2 Galway Road, Arnold, Nottingham, NG5 7AY, and a membership form can be downloaded by CLICKING HERE.

In addition, Mike Birkinshaw, a well known name to many members, is taking up the position of Secretary, and can be contacted via secretaryATthedps.co.uk. We are still looking for somebody to look after the society’s books – if any member would be interested in taking this on, please contact Vice Chairman Jim Dedicoat on vicechairmanATthedps.co.uk or by phone as per the number in Deltic Deadline.

(Please change AT to @ in all the above e-mail addresses – it has been necessary to do this to reduce the amount of spam being generated by web crawlers.)
